We are pioneers on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia using the latest technology called auto-link braces (DAMON 3). These reduce friction and treatment time, giving greater comfort. For those who wish for something more aesthetic for their treatment there is the clear braces option, (ICE-Safiro) which is completely transparent, soft and circular. We are going to work with the Clear Braces ORMCO very soon.
What is the purpose of orthodontics?
Orthodontic treatment is used to set the teeth straight that are in a poor position in order to achieve a good bite to recover normal chewing functions.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
This treatment produces slight discomfort during the first stage, when the teeth are moving. Then, in each subsequent dental appointment there will be some adjustments that can make you feel a bit uncomfortable at the time. This kind of discomfort can be reduced with self-ligating braces used here in Sonrisas Factory.
How often do I have to visit the orthodontist?
There are orthodontic controls every 20-30 days. Using the latest technology of braces makes it possible to reduce the treatment time up to 50% because they do not generate micromovemets that can directly affect the outcomes.
What can I do if the wire hurts me and I feel some pain?
Try to go to the orthodontist as soon as possible, to put it in the right position. If it is not possible, the dentist can cut the wire or turn it down. Don’t do it by yourself because you can spoil them or break the braces. If the wire is loose and hurts, it can be covered with an orthodontic wax until the next visit.
Once the treatment is over will the teeth position be permanent?
Yes, as long as you use the required retainer (orthodontic appliance) once the treatment is over. If you do not use it, the teeth can return to their original position.
Do I have to take X-rays to perform the treatment?
Yes. X-rays are very important before stating the treatment because they make it possible for the orthodontist to make accurate measurements then to get good bite. They help the doctor decide which kind of braces to use or if there are any infections present. They also let us know if there are teeth inside the bone, more teeth than usual or missing teeth that you cannot see.
At what age can I start the treatment?
Generally orthodontic treatment is performed around age eleven or twelve when permanent teeth are present. Some people may be able to start earlier.
Do the teeth need to be extracted to receive treatment?
This depends on the space needed to align the teeth and all cases are different. If the extractions are necessary an orthodontist who chooses the best option for each case will set up appointments. Today the common auto-linked and thermo-sensitive wire techniques have reduced extraction rate in a high percentage of patients.
Is it possible to perform orthodontic treatment if my teeth are loose?
If there is a slight movement and it is under control, there is no problem. Our great professionals will let you know what kind of mobility you have and if it will impede any kind of treatment.
How can I brush my teeth wearing the appliance?
There are special toothbrushes in the market that you can use to clean between the wire and braces. There are also mouthwashes, which can be used to kill bacterial plaque.
Can my teeth go bad with orthodontic treatment?
No, it does not produce dental decay or tooth stains. Not cleaning the teeth in the right way can cause cavities if bacterial plaque collects.
How much time does the treatment take?
Generally, it takes around 1 or 2 years. This depends on the patient’s cooperation and discipline. The time can be reduced if the latest generation braces are applied.
